Why does my pet throw up so much?

Vomiting is a common complaint among pet owners.  It is especially common in cats. There are numerous causes for vomiting such as eating meals too quickly or having intestinal parasites. Pets often cannot handle a diverse menu, and dietary changes can result in vomiting.  Pets may also have allergies to certain ingredients in pet foods. These can develop over time even if the pet has been on the same pet food for years. Most commonly, food allergies are related to proteins and dairy sources, such as chicken, beef, or milk.

There are many, even life-threatening, causes for vomiting such as obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract, kidney or liver disease. Diagnostics are often needed definitively determine the cause for the signs. For this reason, any sudden onset of vomiting, or vomiting accompanied with lethargy, appetite change, weight loss, or diarrhea, should be evaluated by a veterinary professional as soon as possible.
