Dental disease is one of the most common diseases affecting our dogs and cats. Poor dental health can impact lifespan and overall quality of life and should therefore be taken seriously. Genetics and breed play important roles in how quickly dental disease develops in dogs and cats. Furthermore, tartar develops because few pet owners (myself included) brush their pet’s teeth daily.
Unfortunately, once tartar develops, routine brushing will not be enough return the teeth and gums to health, and a dental cleaning under anesthesia is needed. As anesthesia is required, the costs and benefits of the procedure must be weighed, and the decision should be made on a case-by-case basis. If you would like your pet’s teeth assessed, please schedule an appointment with us at Hudson Veterinary Hospital, so we can discuss whether a dental cleaning is indicated.
