Should I Switch Pet Foods if Meat is Not the First Ingredient?

Many pet food companies praise their food for listing meat as the first ingredient. Unfortunately, this has little meaning, due to the way dry foods are formulated. Ingredients in pet foods are always listed in order of weight after water has been removed. Because meats are mostly water, once dried, they often reduce to be of lesser weight than vegetables and other nutrients in the food. Therefore, even if meats amount as the most abundant ingredient, they may be listed second based upon their dry weight.

The most important considerations when choosing a pet food is that your pet is healthy, has a nice coat and skin, and likes it! Should you wish to discuss pet foods for your pet, please contact us to set up a consultation at Hudson Veterinary Hospital.
