Yes, and not just at Thanksgiving. Pumpkins are a winter squash native to N. America. Surprisingly, they offer nutritional and health benefits to our pets. As in most squashes, pumpkins contain a fair amount of fiber. Increased fiber assists in controlling constipation particularly in cats. Increased fiber also helps with large bowel diarrhea (colitis) in dogs and cats.
Additionally, pumpkin contains a fair amount of potassium and Vitamin C, as well as food based beta-carotene which has an anti-cancer effect.
Do not use your old pumpkin left on the front porch since it has already begun to decay. Use canned pumpkin (not pie filling) from the grocery shelf. Check with your veterinarian on the daily amount of pumpkin needed for your individual pet. A Thanksgiving treat year around!
