Sadly, heartworm disease is not decreasing. It is ever present and wide spread. It is found around the world. It is estimated that more than one million dogs are infected in the US alone with hundreds of thousands of heartworm positive dogs being diagnosed each year. The worms are injected into the dog by mosquitoes where they mature to occupy the dog’s heart and lung vessels. Fortunately, regular year around administration of preventative medications will keep your dog safe.
Some reports of resistance to the medications of some subgroup populations of heartworms have been reported in the South. The situation is being carefully monitored. Fortunately, the medications in our area are still very effective. It is very important to keep your dog protected at all times. As always, an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure.
If your dog is not currently protected and has not had a heartworm test in the past year, please call Hudson Veterinary Hospital at 330 650-2929. We will be happy to assist you and your best friend.
