Why is My Cat Drinking So Much Water?

Q

Why is my cat drinking so much water?

A

Cats are very skilled at hiding illness.  Any change in habit may signal a health problem.  Increased water intake, though seemingly a minor behavioral change, may indicate a more serious issue.

Often, a steady increase in water consumption can point to such illnesses as kidney failure, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism.  Other health issues are also possible.  A thorough exam, bloodwork, and urinalysis will usually determine the cause of the increased water intake and lead to a proper diagnosis and treatment.
