When Can I Stop Using Flea Preventative?

Q

When can I stop using flea preventative?

A

Many people mistakenly stop using flea preventative when temperatures drop in the fall. Fall is actually prime time for fleas. They know that winter is coming and they are looking for a warm place (i.e. your pet ) to help them survive those frigid conditions. I definitely do not recommend stopping flea preventative this soon.

In fact, most flea experts say that we need ten days of below-freezing temperatures to be over the threat of fleas. Last year that did not happen at all and it was recommended to offer flea preventative year-round.

Another consideration is that some flea preventatives also prevent ticks. Some ticks, including the species most associated with Lyme disease, are active all year. If ticks are an issue, year-round preventative should be used anyway.
