Essential Oils as Flea Preventative

Are essential oils safe as a flea preventative?

There has been a recent movement in flea preventatives to use certain natural oils instead of man-made chemicals thinking they are somehow safer. A recent study showed that approximately ninety percent of dogs and cats receiving these treatments had adverse reactions to them. While one quarter of these cases involved misapplication, the remaining seventy-five percent were applied per the directions.

Traditional flea preventatives, however, are regulated by the EPA and/or the FDA. Some of the newer medications are considered safe to many times the recommended dose. This does not guarantee that an adverse event will not occur, but it certainly sounds like better odds than essential oils.
